The roar was all around me; the roar of a million impatient refugees and a thousand idling engines. It swirled around me and bounced off the walls and beat against my ear drums with an unprecedented fury. We were all civilians here and not a single uniform could be discerned in the sea of people visible through the gaps between the ships. Almost every square meter of the port was occupied. Even the small patches of grass, allotted to divide the landing pads, had enormous landing struts compacting the soil beneath as they sunk ever deeper under the weight of their stead

A beautiful gold nebula surrounded us. The plumes of stardust were streaked with orange and yellow and dotted with the bright glow of the closest stars. Gold pillars rose light-years above us inside the glowing stellar womb we were encased in. The blackness of the void was only visible in small patches on the wall. It felt as though we were inside a fire ourselves. The light flooded from every direction, the closest of which was the newborn star glowing a bright red just off our bow. My eyes snapped open and adjusted to the darkness. The stars, as well as Goguen’s only moon and a red nebula were the only sources of light. Small, burnt pieces of debris lay around me, visible only in my peripheral vision. My head was pounding as though someone had taken a shovel and hit me in the neck. Every bone in my body was aching. The last thing I remembered was standing in the door of a Moebius when suddenly I was thrown from the door by an explosion. I propped myself up on my elbows and looked around in the meager light.&
